BIO:
K9 Xena, a 9-year-old female English Labrador, served with distinction alongside her handler from June 2018 until her retirement on August 19, 2024. During her career, Xena was deployed 184 times, resulting in 157 alerts and 130 arrests. Her impressive nose was responsible for the seizure of $3,886 in cash, six vehicles, and two illegal firearms.
Xena’s expertise was in high demand, with deployments requested by agencies across Texas, including the Texas Highway Patrol, Jacksboro Police, Texas Game Wardens, Young County, Wise County, and the DEA. She approached every call-out with determination and heart.
On March 21, 2022, Xena sustained injuries during a tornado that directly impacted her K9 unit. A year later, she suffered another injury that led to lasting neurological deficits. With just one week’s notice, Xena was forced into retirement and, like many working dogs, lost access to healthcare benefits.
Thankfully, Xena was welcomed into the Harlows Heroes Foundation, where her medical needs have been supported with love and generosity. Though she still longs to work, Xena is now embracing retirement — chasing her ball, begging for treats, and learning to simply enjoy the life she’s earned.
As Foundation Dog #006, K9 Xena represents the grit, resilience, and grace of working dogs everywhere — and the importance of standing by them long after their service ends.
